Workshop FineMed 2017 : Preparing next generation fine scale experiments in the Mediterranean sea
The pan-Mediterranean FineMed 2017 workshop & summer school has been hold on 26-28 June 2017 at the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography (MIO), Campus Luminy, Université d’Aix-Marseille (AMU). A total of 30 researchers and 13 PhD students have participated from oceanographic institutions from Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon, Israel, Algeria
The theme addressed has been the future opportunities for fine-scale, interdisciplinary campaigns in the Mediterranean sea, in particular in the context of the high-resolution satellite altimetry mission SWOT which will launch in 2021.
The program included 6 lectures/reviews and 13 seminars on the submesoscale, the Mediterranean circulation, and biophysical processes, with topics ranging from physics and biogeochemistry, to genomics and top predators. Some of the participants presented posters with their work as well.
Over the three days, students have been working in small groups and have been involved in an exercise consisting in designing their own fine-scale, interdisciplinary, Mediterranean campaign. Their ideas have been discussed during the last day.
During each day, part of the afternoon has been also devoted to round tables where options for campaigns in the Eastern and Western Mediterranean have been discussed. In particular, we considered the SWOT-related 2018 and 2021 campaign in between Mallorca and Algeria and coordination between the PERLE program and SWOT for operations in the Rhodes gyre.
A summary of the meeting has been presented at the SWOT workshop in Tolosa.
